The Division of Mood and Anxiety Disorders coordinates educational, research and clinical services for depression, bipolar disorder  and anxiety conditions.

Clinical 

Psychiatrists and psychologist of the division provide consultative assessments to mental health professionals in the region, and care for over 200 patients with bipolar disorders, major depression, and anxiety disorders in the Bipolar and Depression health Care Research Clinic.  The clinic provides a strong link to community-provided mental health services. 

Research

The principal research of the Division is organized around the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funded Center for Improving Bipolar Illness Intervention in Hispanic Communities.  The Center, funded in 2004, is one of only two such centers to ever receive support from the NIMH.   Center investigators have developed the first comprehensive rating instrument for bipolar disorders.  The scale, the Bipolar Inventory of Signs and Symptoms Scale, provides scores on 5 fundamental aspects of bipolar conditions: depression, activation/mania, irritability, anxiety and unrealistic thinking.  Center investigators have made major contributions to discovery and application of improved medications and psychotherapeutic techniques for bipolar disorders.  The Center also has addressed approaches to more effectively maintain recovery and sustain good function through preventing and resolving barriers to continued care, such as side effects and tailoring of treatment to the needs of the individual patient, and has particularly addressed these needs as relevant to Hispanic Americans. The Division serves as one of 6 centers nationwide in the NIMH Bipolar Trials Network, the purpose of which is to implement innovative clinical studies of treatments that have the potential to substantively improve long term outcomes in bipolar disorders.

Training 

The Division faculty provide the primary lectures and case conferences on mood disorder recognition and treatment for medical students and physicians in training as psychiatrists.  The Division offers specialty research training in psychopharmacology and research techniques in mood disorders for psychiatrists and psychologists.  Division faculty also provide continuing education training for psychiatrists and other mental health professionals in San Antonio, Texas and worldwide.
