DIRECTOR:

Dr. Donald Royall

DESCRIPTION:

The Geriatric Psychiatry Program (GPP) operates a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) clinic for patients of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System’s Audie L. Murphy Division Hospital (STVHS) network, and a geriatric psychiatry consultation service for two local long term care centers, the Morningside Manor retirement community, and the Air Force Villages life-care community. Outpatient geropsychiatry services are provided through the STVHS’s outpatient department, and The University of Texas’ Geriatric Assessment Clinic in the department of psychiatry. Extramural clinical experiences are available with local clinical faculty.

The GPP does have an active geropsychiatry fellowship.

PERSONNEL:

Donald Royall, M.D.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS:

Didactic activities of the GPP include the PGY-IV geropsychiatry seminar, and liaisons to the multidisciplinary Hartford Scholars’ Grand Rounds in Geriatrics and Gerontology Seminars. Weekly didactic seminars in geropsychiatry and geropsychopharmacology are provided in the GEM.

RESEARCH PROJECTS:

The GPP’s research activities are expanding. The GPP is involved in several multi-center phase-III clinical trials for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Dr. Royall has initiated a longitudinal study of dementia’s early detection in the Air Force Villages, a large retirement community. The Air Force Villages also has the Freedom House, a dementia specific care facility for Alzheimer’s disease clinical care and bio-behavioral research.
