MISSION:

  • Provide high quality psychopharmacological and psychosocial treatment to children and adolescents with emotional, attention and behavioral disorders.
  • Research into the causes, both biological and psychosocial, of psychiatric disorders of children and adolescents.
  • Development of improved treatments for child and adolescent psychiatric disorders.
  • Education of medical students and psychiatry residents in the most advanced methods of treatment of these disorders.

Educational Programs:

The Division has a residency in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The residency provides physicians with a broad experience in psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, consultation and community psychiatry. Clinical experiences are obtained in a wide variety of settings:

  • First Year:
    • San Antonio State Hospital Adolescent Unit
      Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital
      Krier Correctional Residential Treatment Center
      Bexar County Juvenile Detention Center (Forensics)

  • Second Year:
    • Child Guidance Center of San Antonio (Outpatient Psychotherapy)
      University of Texas Behavioral Health
      Head Start

RESEARCH

The Division is engaged in research on a number of important fronts in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. The Division has a close relationship with the UTHSCSA Research Imaging Center, which provides state of the art technology in positron emission tomography (PET) and both structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Current projects include:

  • Clinical trials of new agents in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
  • Functional MRI studies of impulsivity in children with ADHD and controls.
  • Neuropsychological functioning and mood disorders in juvenile offenders.
  • Development of evidence-based practices for the treatment of ADHD. The Division is a major participant in the Children's Medication Algorithm Project (CMAP), in conjunction with the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (TXMHMR).
